Friday: the strongest night of the three

Friday has the widest mix of options, whether you want a proper night brunch, casual drinks, games with friends or a ladies’ night.

Saturday: five brunches, one day

Saturday is the one to plan around, with five very different brunches ranging from an easy breakfast to a full beachside afternoon.

Mina Al Arab: the strip that does not get written about

If you only have one evening, spend it here. Mina Al Arab holds more running offers than anywhere else in the emirate, and they sit close enough together to walk between.

Anantara Mina anchors it, with the Beach House Golden Hour daily from 4pm to 7pm, a mixology class, a Little Chefs session for the children at AED 120 Thursday to Sunday, and Mekong next door.

NoHo Bar & Grill runs four separate offers, including Social Hour at AED 35 and a pizza deal at AED 65, all daily. If you would rather not move, the Sofitel complex runs seven separate things across the weekend.

La Haute Croissanterie serves the Fruit Kiss breakfast daily, 8am to 12pm, AED 75. Afternoon Tea at Citron runs daily, 3pm to 7pm, AED 150. Gentlemen's Night at Veritas runs daily from 3pm to midnight at AED 220 net. WAKA takes Friday and Saturday with Tiki Rhythms and Sunday with Polynesian dining, and runs its own Golden Hour on Fridays and Sundays. Reunion takes the Friday ladies' night.

Where to stay, and what stops when

Rove Al Marjan Island runs its 36 hour stay and SO/ Ras Al Khaimah its Romantic Getaway, and both stop at the end of August. If either appeals, this is the last weekend for it.

Running longer: The Summer Pause at The Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Desert from AED 500, Kids Stay & Dine Free at Mövenpick Al Marjan from AED 600, and the Summer Escape at Anantara Mina from AED 780, all to the end of September. Radisson Resort holds its full board deals to mid September, and Hampton by Hilton Marjan Island runs a senior rate.

One to save for midweek: the Cove Rotana 36 hour staycation from AED 355 is a weekday rate, so it does not apply on a Friday to Sunday. Worth knowing if you can take the Monday instead.

The quiet version

Not every long weekend needs a plan. Creative Hands Pottery Studio runs hand building and wheel throwing sessions by appointment, indoors and air conditioned, which suits an August afternoon better than a beach does. Call them for times and prices.

Otherwise take the late afternoon at Al Marjan Island, walk the waterfront, and stay for sunset once the temperature drops. That part is free.

Why bother, in summer

Because the variety holds up. Over three days you can eat five different brunches, drink for AED 25, sit through a Polynesian Sunday, put the children in a cookery class and still be home within the hour. The summer rates make it cheap, and the two best ones stop at the end of the month, which is what makes this particular weekend worth the effort rather than the next one.
